The Brief

A prestigious residential development in Chelsea, SW3, brought us an exacting specification challenge. The developer needed a full suite of motorised window treatments and bespoke soft furnishings across multiple private apartments. Each apartment required tight co-ordination between our team, the interior design practice and the main contractor. In addition, the entire scheme had to land within a demanding programme.

The design brief called for motorised roman blinds throughout. These needed to combine precise light control with silent operation. Moreover, every blind had to integrate fully with each apartment’s smart home system. Alongside the motorised blinds, the brief also required bespoke curtains and complementary soft furnishings — each piece hand-made to the interior designer’s specification — to create a co-ordinated luxury scheme from floor to ceiling.

The development sits within one of London’s most sought-after residential addresses. As a result, the standard of finish had to match the setting. Nothing off-the-shelf would do. Instead, every element needed to be made to measure, installed without compromise, and delivered by a supplier who understood both the technical demands of a motorised specification and the craftsmanship that a bespoke soft furnishings commission requires.

The Solution – Silent Gliss systems specified

After a detailed site survey and close consultation with the interior design team, we selected the Silent Gliss SG 2355 electrically operated roman blind as the primary window treatment throughout the development. We chose the SG 2355 for three reasons. First, it delivers near-silent motorised operation. Second, it offers precise intermediate stop positioning for accurate light control. Third, it integrates directly with third-party smart home systems — so each blind works via the building’s home automation platform, a remote handset, or the Silent Gliss Move app.

For rooms needing a softer light quality, we added the Silent Gliss SG 2120 roman blind as a secondary layer. We hung this on the same fixings and wired it for independent control. As a result, occupants can move between full blackout and filtered natural light with a single command.

We supplied all roman blind systems made to measure and fully assembled before delivery. We then recessed concealed headboxes into purpose-built ceiling reveals, so the hardware disappears entirely when the blinds are raised. The architectural finish is clean and uninterrupted throughout.

Motor and control specification

Our team fitted each SG 2355 unit with a 24V DC motor and wired it directly into the development’s central home automation infrastructure. Wall switches in each room handle primary local control. In addition, the Silent Gliss Move app gives occupants scene-setting and remote operation from their smartphone. In open-plan living areas, we grouped multiple blinds for simultaneous operation, while still leaving individual override available on every unit.

Our team wired and commissioned all motorisation in direct co-ordination with the main contractor’s M&E team during the fit-out phase. We then completed the blind installation as the final stage at practical completion.

The bespoke soft furnishings

Alongside the motorised roman blinds, our workroom produced a full suite of bespoke soft furnishings to the interior designer’s brief. We considered every element together — from the blind fabric to the curtain heading to the cushion covers on the window seat. Consequently, the finished scheme reads as a single resolved interior rather than a collection of individually sourced items.

Curtains: We made floor-to-ceiling wave curtains in a Belgian linen blend, fully interlined for acoustic weight, thermal performance and structured hang. For the heading, we chose a wave style compatible with the Silent Gliss SG 3900 cord-operated track. This heading produces a clean, contemporary fold that echoes the architectural language of the development.

Lining and interlining: We interlined every curtain with a medium-weight bump interlining and finished each with a sateen lining. Together, these layers give the curtains the substance expected in a scheme of this standard. Furthermore, we used blackout lining in all master bedroom curtains to achieve complete light exclusion.

Additional soft furnishings: We also made co-ordinating scatter cushions, seat pads and a window seat cover from the same fabric family. As a result, the interior designer could hand the scheme to the client as a complete, coherent interior rather than a window treatment scheme with separate accessories.

Our workroom team hand-finished every item. We then delivered each piece pre-pressed to site, so our installation team could complete the scheme without any remedial work on the day.

Installation and project management

We co-ordinated the window treatment programme directly with the principal contractor from the outset. Our team planned site access around the M&E first and second fix phases, so all motorisation wiring was in place before we arrived to install the blinds. We also confirmed ceiling reveal depths for the concealed headboxes at the design stage. The main contractor then built these out to our specification — which eliminated the retrofitting problems that typically occur when window treatment contractors join a project late.

We pre-assembled all Silent Gliss systems off-site, checked each unit and labelled them room by room before delivery. Our own employed installation team carried out every installation — we do not subcontract this work. Each unit was commissioned and limit-set on the day of installation. Finally, our dressers completed the scheme by dressing the curtains and soft furnishings, followed by a full handover demonstration of the control systems for the client.

We delivered the project on programme. We completed all apartments in sequence to align with the developer’s practical completion schedule.

We work closely with AV and home automation integrators to ensure seamless commissioning.

Do you supply bespoke soft furnishings alongside Silent Gliss window treatment systems?

Yes — and we consider this one of our strongest points of difference. Our workroom produces bespoke curtains, pelmets, blinds, cushions and upholstered items to your specification, made and installed alongside our Silent Gliss systems. Offering both motorised window treatments and bespoke soft furnishings from a single supplier simplifies the procurement process for developers, interior designers and main contractors, and ensures that every element of the window treatment scheme is co-ordinated from the outset.

What is the maximum size for a Silent Gliss SG 2355 motorised roman blind?

The SG 2355 is designed for domestic and light commercial applications. Maximum widths and drop dimensions depend on the fabric weight and motor configuration — our team will confirm specific size limits during the site survey stage. For very large or heavy-duty applications, we will recommend the appropriate system from the wider Silent Gliss range, which includes heavier-duty motorised options.

Do you work with architects and main contractors on specification projects?

Yes. We provide a full specification support service for architects and interior designers, including NBS specification text, BIM objects, technical data sheets and CPD on request. We are experienced in working within the programme requirements of residential developments and commercial fit-outs, and can provide a named project contact for the duration of your scheme.
